A day in the life of a SCUBA Instructor Candidate

Day 16 - MSDT Prep Day 2

Instructor Development Course MSDT OWSI PADI

Another awesome day here at Rainbow Reef Dive Center in Key Largo, Florida as I finish up a few more specialty instructor ratings.  We finished the Deep Diver and Wreck Diver ratings today, as well as Night Diver tonight.

Our first dive was on the Spiegel Grove this morning, running lines and doing some penetration.  We then motored over to the Benwood again and dropped off the ledge into almost 90 feet of water, where we timed each other performing skills to see what the effects of depth were.  I was able to tie a bowline as fast at depth...

Day 15 - Master Scuba Diver Trainer Prep Day 1

IDC Instructor Development Course MSDT OWSI PADI

Today was the first day that I dove as an Open Water Scuba Instructor! We are starting our Master Scuba Diver Trainer Preparation by adding specialty courses that we can teach, and started today off with Deep Diver and Wreck Diver.  Our first dive was on the USS Spiegel Grove, a 510' Landing Dock Ship (LDS) which was purposely sunk as an artificial reef.  What a sight!  She lies in 134' of water, and our dive today maxed out at about 80' as we practiced some of the skills taught in the deep diver specialty.  I would love to come back...

Day 14 - Instructor Exam Day 2

IDC IE Instructor Development Course Instructor Exam PADI

So, this morning we went to Jules' Undersea Lodge for the open water portion of our Instructor Exam.  I got to start out with a physics test first thing in the morning - which I passed this time without any brain malfunctions!  Then it was in the water to demonstrate the following teaching presentations:  Alternate Air Source Breathing with Buddy (Stationary), and Using a Lift Bag to Safely Rig and Lift an object weighing no more than 25 pounds to the surface.  Both briefing, skills, and debriefing went without any hitches, and I scored a 4.7 and 4.8 respectively.

The...

Day 13 - Instructor Exam Day 1

IDC IE Instructor Development Course Instructor Exam PADI

Well, today was the BIG day of the Instructor Exams.  We started bright and early at the pool this morning at 7:00 AM.  The first thing we had to do was demonstrate, with instructor quality, 5 of the many skills that are taught during scuba lessons.  The skills that we were assigned were: Regulator Recovery and Clear, Mask Remove and Replace, CESA, Neutral Buoyancy Rise and Fall, and Alternate Air Source.

The skills are scored on a scale of 1 - 5, with a 5 being the best score you can receive.  I got all fives on this portion -...

Day 12 - Emergency First Response Instructor and IE Orientation

IDC IE Instructor Development Course Instructor Exam PADI

Well, the IDC is now behind us...

Today, we were certified as Emergency First Response Instructors, so we are now all certified to teach CPR, AED, and First Aid!

We then held a little "graduation" ceremony and finalized our paperwork that states that we had successfully completed the IDC, and that we were applying to take the Instructor Exams! We were each presented with a red polo with the Rainbow Reef logo, the PADI logo on one sleeve and "IDC 2015" on the other sleeve - the same shirts that our Course Directors and Staff Instructors had worn all week.
